Symptoms of overdose
It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Zyban with the following:

- Alcohol
- Amantadine (Symmetrel)
- Antidepressants such as Norpramin, Pamelor, Pa xil, Prozac, Tofranil, and Zoloft
- Beta blockers (heart and blood pressure medications) such as Inderal, Lopressor, and Tenormin
- Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
- Cimetidine (Tagamet)
- Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)
- Heart-stabilizing drugs such as Rythmol and Tambocor
- Levodopa (Dopar, Larodopa, Sinemet)
- Major tranquilizers such as Haldol, Risperdal and Thorazine < br> - MAO inhibitors such as the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate
- Orphenadrine (Norflex)
- Phenobarbital
- Phenytoin (Dilantin)

What special precautions should I follow?
Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits, especially during the first few months of treatment with this medicine. The amount of Zyban you take may have to be changed often to meet the needs of your condition and to help avoid unwanted effects.

Do not take Zyban within 14 days of taking an MAO inhibitor.

Zyban is sold under different brand names for different uses. If you are already taking medicine for mental depression or to help you stop smoking, discuss this with your health care professional before taking Zyban. It is very important that you receive only o ne prescription for Zyban at a time.

Other Medicines
When you are taking Zyban, it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following:

- Tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline [e.g., Elavil ], amoxapine [e.g., Asendin], clomipramine [e.g., Anafranil], desipramine [e.g., Pertofrane], doxepin [e.g., Sinequan], imipramine [e.g., Tofranil], nortriptyline [e.g., Aventyl], protriptyline [e.g., Vivactil], trimipramine [e.g., Surmontil]) or
-
- Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor activity (isocarboxazid [e.g., Marplan], phenelzine [e.g., Nardil], procarbazine [e.g., Matulane], selegi line [e.g., Eldepryl], tranylcypromine [e.g., Parnate])— Do not take Zyban while you are taking or within 14 days of taking an MAO inhibitor

What is this medicine
3 Zyban (Wellbutrin SRR, ZybanR)
Approved indication: 1) Symptomatic relief of depressive illness (effectiveness for use > 8 weeks has not been evaluated in controlled trials). 2) As an aid to smo king cessation (6-7 weeks).

Mechanism of action: Zyban is chemically related to sympathomimetic drugs and unrelated to other antidepressants. It blocks reuptake of noradrenaline and dopamine, but the mechanism for its clinical effects is unknown.

Pharmacokinetics: It is extensively metabolized by the liver to at least 3 active metabolites. Half-life of parent drug and active meta bolites is 20 to 37 hrs.

Before Taking This Medicine
Pregnancy—Studies have not been done in pregnant women. However, Zyban has not been reported to cause birth defects or other problems in animal studies.

How should you take this medication?
Zyban comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken one to three times a day and may be taken with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or divide Wellbutrin SR or Zyban tablets. Follow the d irections on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Zyban exactly as directed.

Continue to take Zyban even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Zyban without talking to your doctor, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Your doctor probably will want to decrease your dose gradually. This drug must be taken regularly for a few weeks before its full effect is felt.
